Learning Dutch with a smile


“Start learning Dutch as quickly as possible”, is probably one of the first things you’ll hear when looking for a job in Belgium. Not an easy task, but very rewarding once you master it.

So, don’t get demotivated. Because although learning Dutch can be hard, when you take a closer look at some of these words it can also be quite funny.

Laura Frame, a Scottish illustrator, started drawing every amusing Dutch word she encountered while living in Ghent and learning the local language. You can find all of her beautiful and funny drawings here. We’ve chosen 15 that will put a smile upon your face.

The last one is a slice of bread which in Dutch language is translated into "butter ham".
